Young Israelis with entire lives ahead of them. Careers they would never have. Families they would never build. Children they would never meet.
They went out to dance.
They never came home.
Where is THAT story?

Where are the Gazan civilians who also crossed into Israel during the assault, some participating in looting and violence? Where is Hamas's military infrastructure throughout Gaza's civilian environment? Where are the tunnels? Where is the reality of fighting an enemy operating from within a densely populated civilian environment? Where are the evacuation orders, phone calls, text messages and leaflets Israel has repeatedly used to warn civilians before operations and certain strikes?

Apparently, context would ruin the show.
Because that audience didn't come for complexity. They came for a villain.
And they got one:
ISRAEL.

Then came twenty-five minutes of applause and another prize.
Bravo.

Travel to Europe, present the darkest possible portrait of your own country, remove everything that complicates the story, collect your standing ovation and take home your little statue.
Congratulations.

Maybe put it next to a photograph of an Israeli reservist who barely saw his children for months. Or a wounded soldier learning to walk again. Or perhaps one of the hostages.
That would really complete the display.

I wasn't embarrassed for Israel.
I was embarrassed for THEM.

But Venice is only one stage.
Change the country. Change the accent. Change the audience.
The performance remains remarkably familiar.
In certain circles, few things earn a Jew faster applause than publicly condemning the Jewish state.

Across the Atlantic, the stage simply looks different.
Bernie Sanders has accused Israel of genocide.

GENOCIDE.
Do people even understand what that word means anymore?
My people certainly do.

Before the Holocaust, Poland was home to more than three million Jews. Approximately three million Polish Jews were murdered. Families disappeared. Communities that had existed for centuries disappeared. An entire Jewish civilization was almost wiped off the map.
THAT is genocide.

And now that word is thrown at Israel like another fashionable political hashtag.
No.
I reject it.
I believe my country.
I believe in the fundamental morality of the IDF.

Does that mean every Israeli soldier is an angel? Obviously not. Every army has people who break the rules. Every war has mistakes. The American military has had them. The British military has had them. The French military has had them.
Israel has a military justice system. Soldiers who break the law can be investigated, prosecuted and punished.

There is an enormous difference between saying "a soldier committed a crime" or "an operation went horribly wrong" and screaming:
"THE JEWISH STATE IS COMMITTING GENOCIDE."

Yet when Israel is involved, every mistake becomes doctrine. Every rogue soldier becomes "the IDF." Every civilian death becomes proof of genocide.
Hamas disappears. October 7 disappears. The hostages disappear. The tunnels disappear. The battlefield disappears.
And Israel itself becomes the crime.
F*CK THAT.

Then comes my favorite sentence:
"As a Jew..."

Oh, please.
Being Jewish doesn't magically make bullshit true.
Your Jewish surname is not a PhD in the Middle East. Your grandmother's Shabbat candles are not diplomatic credentials. Your Bar Mitzvah photographs do not give you a lifetime license to provide kosher certification for every accusation against the Jewish state.

And unfortunately, I don't only encounter this phenomenon on television or at film festivals.
I know some of these people personally.
I live next to Habima Square in Tel Aviv. I see the demonstrations. I recognize faces. Some I know from projects I worked on years ago.

And every time I see them, I want to ask one simple question:
Why the hell are you still here?
Seriously.
You describe Israel as evil, racist, genocidal and irredeemable. You seem embarrassed by Zionism. You spend your time explaining to foreigners how horrible your country is.
So why are you living in Tel Aviv?

It's sadness.
They seem lost. Empty.
As though somewhere along the way opposition to Israeli policy stopped being a political position and rejection of Israel became an identity.
The desperate need to be the acceptable Jew.
"Don't worry. I'm not like THOSE Jews."
Pathetic.

And to our enlightened friends in America and Europe, try one little thought experiment.
Imagine terrorists crossing from Mexico into the United States one Saturday morning, entering American towns, murdering families, burning homes, attacking a music festival and dragging Americans back across the border as hostages.
Adjusted roughly for population, imagine about 40,000 Americans murdered in a single day and thousands upon thousands kidnapped.
Now look me in the eye and tell me America wouldn't go to war.
Give me a F*CKING break.

Any serious country would respond because every government has one fundamental obligation:
Protect its citizens.
Israel does not lose that right because Hamas operates among civilians. Israel does not lose that right because Europeans become uncomfortable when Jews defend themselves.
