David Raziel, or "Aluf (Brigadier) Ben-Anat" as he was known in the underground, the commander of the Irgun Zevai Leumi, was born in 1911 in Jerusalem. He studied both in yeshiva and at the Hebrew University. He was a member of Betar and a fervent believer in Jewish nationalism and while yet a youth. learned the use of weapons.

In 1937 he and his friends decided to abandon the policy of self-restraint practised against the Arab terrorists and following successful raids on terrorist groups at the time of the "disturbances". he was chosen to head the Irgun and it was he who transformed it into a military fighting force. He was hunted by the British and in 1939 travelled to Poland to recruit tens of thousands of Betar and Irgun members to join the fight for

Jewish national independence, war caught and arrested by the British. When the Second World War broke out, he was released and ordered his forces to declare a truce and help the British in their struggle against the Nazis. He set a personal example by leading a dangerous commando espionage mission to Iraq (which was then collaborating with the Germans) for British Military Intelligence. He hoped to take advantage of this opportunity to capture the Mufti Haj Amin El Husseini who had taken refuge in Iraq.

Raziel was killed in a German air-raid in Iraq and was buried at Habbaniya. In 1955 he was reinterred in Cyprus and in 1961 his remains were brought to Israel for burial in the military cemetery on Mt. Herzl in Jerusalem. David Raziel created a Jewish fighting force, prepared it for battle and died in the fight against the Nazis. He will always be honoured as one of the Jewish people's bravest fighters, as one who laid the foundations of our national defence and as an outstanding example of the Jewish officer whose battle-cry is "Follow mel"

Rabbi Nachman's philosophy promoted a unique type of faith and joy, of coping with  life's difficulties through religious strengthening and hope, love of the Land of Israel and the Jewish people and special individual guidance showing each person how to discover the "song of life" through a search for good qualities within oneself and others. Rabbi Nachman's ideas are the source of his disciples' studies and way of life and they have inspired authors, poets, intellectuals and artists.

His doctrines and teachings are prevalent and well known, his books are studied by people from all walks of life and his grave site in Uman, Ukraine has become one of the most well known places in the Jewish world. Tens of thousands of people make pilgrimages to his grave, and especially on Rosh Hashana, as he instructed and requested.

The expulsion of the Jews from Spain at the end of the 15th century and the restrictions imposed on Jews-in other locations in Europe all resulted in Jews emigrating to Israel. Newcomers were attracted to Zefat, a center for the Jews of the Galilee as well as a safe city because of the Ottoman rulers residing there. Development of the Kabbalah and Messianic expectations also strengthened the community in Zefat, starting from the 16th century.

A way had to be found of reopening the road to Jerusalem. Operation "Nachshon" was mounted from the 3-15 April 1948 and marked a turning point in the war. For the first time a force of division strength was assembled and given the task of conquering the Arab strongpoints along the road to Jerusalem and holding them in order to keep the road to Jerusalem open. There was fierce fighting particularly around Kastel which changed hands a number of times, but the road to Jerusalem was opened and a number of convoys reached Jerusalem.

Hebron was highly regarded because of the ancient tombs in the city, although the number of Jewish inhabitants remained small.

The Cyclamen persicum is a common wildflower in Israel, foundfrom Mount Hermon in the north and as far south as the southern Hebron Mountains. The rare Cyclamen coum also grows wild in Israel, on Mount Meron, in the northern Golan Heights and on Mount Hermon.
Some 20 wild Cyclamen species exist in the world, from Somalia in Africa to Central Europe, mostly in the Middle East and southwest Asia. Cyclamen persicum is the largest of the Cyclamen species and it is the species from which the cultivated Cyclamen was derived.
Cyclamen persicum mainly grows among rocks, but also in other places. The plants may grow singlely or at times create dense carpets. Either way, they are breathtaking.
The Cyclamen's shape - the flower is turned downward, apparently to protect its pollen from the rain, and the heart-shaped leaves which have a unique color pattern for each plant - differentiate it from all the other wild flowers in Israel and grant it a very attractive appearance. Because of its beauty, the Cyclamen used to be picked in large quantities, causing the populations to dwindle. Thus, it is now among the protected wildflowers of Israel.
The Cyclamen has many popular uses: the leaves may be stuffed or eaten cooked in salads, the (poisonous) bulb is used as a "soap" and it was used for illegal fishing in the past as well as for medicinal purposes.

The Cyclamen was recently chosen as Israel's "National Flower".
