In honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Reunification of Jerusalem, the people of Israel makes a covenant with its eternal capital city, as was done 2,450 years earlier by Nehemiah and the returnees from exile in Babylon. The present Covenant is signed in special ceremonies by Jewish leaders in Israel and abroad. This medal is a tangible symbol of the Covenant. Each of us can fulfill the passage engraved upon it, which is also this year's slogan" "pray for the peace of Jerusalem".

To mark the 20th Anniversary of the city's reunification, a special commemorative coin has been minted. It depicts Ammunition Hill, a memorial site to the soldiers who fell in the war which reunified the city, and the Lions' Gate (St. Stephen's Gate) the historic gate of the Old City Wall which is the approach to the Via Dolorosa and the Dome of the Rock. It was through this gate that the first Israeli soldiers entered the Old City in 1967.
This coin represents a memorial to the courage and bravery which brought down the
dividing walls, swept away the minefields, and paved the way to rebuilding Jerusalem as a city of peace and hope.

Three thousand years ago King David conquered Jerusalem from the Jebusites and established the "City of David" on the ridge above the Pool of Siloam. The city was surrounded by deep valleys on three sides. Above it, to the north, was the hill upon which the Temple would be built. David turned Jerusalem into the capital of the Kingdom of Israel, concentrating all royal, political and religious authority, in a single place and person for the first time. David's son Solomon completed his father's work and built the Temple. Ruled by many nations in the course of its history, Jerusalem has stimulated the imagination of much of mankind. It remains the City of David to this day.
