On the political scene in Poland, Gruenbaum headed the Radical Zionist faction, initially known in Poland as Al Hamishmar.[1] In 1919 he was elected to the Sejm (Polish parliament), where, together with Apolinary Hartglas, he organized a "Jewish bloc" that united most of the Jewish parties. He was the moving force in forming a collaboration with other minority parties represented in the Sejm, including Germans, Ukrainians, and others, to form a Bloc of National Minorities alliance in 1922, that acted to represent the rights of minority populations in Poland. His efforts brought about an increase of Jewish representation in the Sejm, which was accompanied by a rise of the political Zionism. Gruenbaum was known for his courageous and militant stance against his opponents and on behalf of minorities' interests, while equally critical of the ultra-orthodox party Agudat Israel and Jewish lobbying. Esther Raab (1894-1981)
Esther Raab, Israel's first native poet, was born in Petach Tikva, the first Hebrew moshava (agricultural colony). Her father, Judah Raab, was among the founders of Petach Tikva. Her poems began to be published in the early 1920's and her first book Kimshonim (Thistles) came out in 1980
The happiest years of her life were those spent growing up in the moshava, with its landscapes, animals and vegetation, and in time - her wealth, friends, home in Tel Aviv, which was a gathering place for writers and artists in the early 1930's, and most of all - her poems, written over the course of more than 60 years, until just before her death at age 87.
The low points in her life were marked by her disappointing loves and marriage, her years of silence, her childlessness and in her later years she lost her fortune and was haunted by nightmares.
Author Yehoshua Kenaz wrote of her poetry: "Reading these poems is an Israeli experience, a Mediterranean experience, a first class artistic experience that poet Esther Raab was perhaps the first to express in such a bold and pure manner."
